Attorney of one of the key suspects in the Haitian President’s assassination case Mario Antonia Palacios filed a plea in the Jamaica Supreme Court for his immediate release.
The suspect, Palacios, was arrested by the Jamaican police authorities on October 8, 2021, for illegally entering the border of Jamaica and was arrested. As per his affidavit, Palacios arrived in Jamaica without any documents.
The court ordered him to pay a $8,000 fine or serve five days in prison. On this, Palacios stated he chose to serve a sentence as he couldn’t pay the fine.
Palacios has been detained at the high-security Horizon Adult Remand Centre in St Andrew. In the plea, the attorney named Carolyn Cameron QC mentioned that Palacios continued imprisonment is illegal and unlawful.
The attorney of Palacios has filed a habeas corpus application during a special Christmas Eve court.
Cameron stated that her client’s punishment expired on October 21, but still, he is in prison. She added that the Colombian Embassy had prepared the temporary travel documents to return to his homeland.
She cited,” We want an immediate release of Mr Palacios. He has been eagerly waiting for his deportation or repatriation, but nothing has happened. So, we urge you that don’t promote the unlawful detention of Mr Palacios.”
The attorneys of the Jamaican government has opposed the application, saying that the Haitian authorities had already submitted the second extradition request for Palacios on Thursday. Now, they want time to read the extradition request to determine whether it meets the required legal standard.
The case is underway at the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston.
President of Haiti Jovel Moisie was assassinated on July 7, 2021, at his private residence in the capital city Port-au-Prince. The police officials noted that most Colombians mercenaries were behind the assassination.
Various other pieces of evidence and theories have been revealed since the assassination took place.
