Jamaica plans to create first underwater sculpture park

The Montego Bay Marine Park Trust and Smilozone Waste Management Limited are the developer of the project. The main aim of the project is to promote awareness about the marine and coastal environment.

Jamaica: Preparations for the making of the underwater sculpture park is in full swing in Jamaica as the government is planning to create a habitat for marine life and serve as a new tourist attraction in Montego Bay.

The Montego Bay Marine Park Trust and Smilozone Waste Management Limited are the developer of the project. The main aim of the project is to promote awareness about the marine and coastal environment

On Tuesday, Executive Director of the Marine Park, Hugh Shim, while addressing Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’, stated that the underwater attraction would show the Jamaican-type mermaid and depict the sculptures made of glass.

Earlier, the country had a 500-pound mermaid figure that had already been crafted and will be the first sculpture installed

Shim further outlined the two real purposes behind the sculpture park and stated:

  • These sculptures turned out into coral reefs eventually, or they became habitats for the marine line.
  • The part main aim of the park is to strengthen and enhance the tourism aspect of the country.
  • It would also be turned out as a new attraction, and there wouldn’t be any like it in the country.

He further invited the individuals and organizations to be part of the initiative and stated that they are poised to enhance the health of the reef and ecosystem over the ensuring years.
