Jamaica: New Chief of Defence Staff promises to lead by example

Jamaican Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss-Gorman, has taken a pledge to lead by examples and experiences as the Jamaican Defence Force (JDF) faces the challenges related to the peace and security of the nation.

While addressing the Change of Command Parade at Up Park Camp in Kingston on Friday, Rear Admiral Wemyss-Gorman called and asked the members of the Force to commit to serving towards the interest of the entire nation.

She said, “We must act together with urgency as we prepare for the challenges coming ahead and also shape the security of the nation for our children and grandchildren for years to come.

“Our defence forces must ensure continuous support and commitment to the people of Jamaica and work efficiently to curb the threats towards safety and security concerns.”

I will put my best to encourage every service member to do their duty, familiar with all the required values and committed to the mission. We must do our jobs in the best way and to the best of our ability as we strive to achieve desired goals,” she added.

The 29-year veteran of the Jamaica Defence Forces has pledged to continue with the up-gradation of the Force to enable the entity better to carry out its role of defending the nation at sea, land, in the air and cyberspace.

She said that her efforts will align with the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), which draws the JDF course up to the year 2037.

Wemyss-Gorman has ensured that she intends to “leverage the Caribbean Military Academy to provide the education to the members of the Force, consistent with our trajectory of transformation, thereby influencing the region and impacting the world.
