New York: Indian-origin Sikh woman official Lieutenant Manmeet Colon has been appointed as the Assistant Chief of Police in the US State of Connecticut. She became the first-ever second-in-command of Asian descent appointed in the department.
Lt Manmeet Colon took the oath of office on Friday in the presence of dozens of friends, family members, city workers, and police colleagues. She became the third assistant police chief of the city and the department’s first-ever second-in-command of Asian descent.
Colon stated that her appointment as the department’s first Indian-American assistant chief will work as a source of inspiration for those of similar backgrounds who want to pursue their careers in law enforcement. During her appointment, she quoted that she has been born in a Sikh family and speaks Punjabi. She will always love her heritage and culture.
While talking about her duty, Colon added that she will always prioritize the values and missions of the department and will never get impartial. Her decisions will always be based on fair and honest investigations and stated that she will follow her background, traditions, and family values. She also expressed her pleasure in getting space at the table.
The Board of Police Commissioners in New Haven accepted the appointment of Colon. She served as the lieutenant in the internal affairs office at the age of 37. While joining fellow assistant chiefs David Zannelli and Bertram Ettienne, Colon will work in the “Dream Team” of the Board of Police Commissioners. Chair Evelise Riberio described that Police Chief Karl Jacobson will surround himself with those at the top of the department.
Colon has been promoted to the position after she served in various other ranks. She served in a wide variety of roles during her tenure with the NHPD. She also provided service to patrol as a detective in the special victim’s unit. She also worked as the as a sergeant supervising the robbery and burglary unit, as a lieutenant and district manager for Newhallville and Dixwell, and most recently as the head of the Internal Affairs division.
