Jammu and Kashmir, India: The government of Jammu and Kashmir launched the ‘UT Level Food Processing Programme for Development of Clusters for Specific Products of J&K’, which is worth Rs 879.85 crore. 

The aim of the project is to revolutionise the food processing sector and transform the lives of the farmers in Jammu and Kashmir. The government stated that the programme will also help to increase the income of the farmers and minimise post-harvest losses. 

According to the official statement, the motive behind the project is to increase the cost, quality, branding and sustainability of the seven identified products within five years. The statement further mentioned that in order to achieve the goals, the government is on the path of investment in value-addition, logistics, marketing and branding of various agriculture, horticulture and livestock products. 

The project will establish the processing and marketing infrastructure, provide growth and development opportunities to stakeholders and facilitate suitable economies of scale in production and post-harvest activities in the 17 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. 

The allocation of the budget has been done by the government, and the project will get Rs 879.75 crore. The government outlined that the project will also help in the creation of 7,030 direct jobs and also establish 34 enterprises. It will generate a revenue of 1,436.04 crores every year.

“UT Level Food Processing Programme for Development of Clusters for Specific Products of J&K” is one among the 29 projects which were approved by the Jammu and Kashmir administration after being recommended by the UT Level Apex Committee for holistic development of agriculture and allied sectors in UT of J&K. 

The main focus of the programme will be seven products in 17 districts such as milk for Jammu and Pulwama; walnut for Kupwara and Kishtwar, Basmati for RS Pura, Samba and Kathua; vegetables which can be conventional, organic, exotic and mushrooms for Doda, Budgam, Samba and Udhampur, meat and poultry for Srinagar and Kathua; Trout for Anantnag and Ganderbal, besides cherry for Ganderbal and Baramulla.
