FIONA: The Government of Bermuda has upgraded the Hurricane watch to a Hurricane WARNING. This means that hurricane conditions have changed from possible to expected across the WARNING area.
Fiona remains a catastrophic CATEGORY 4 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 130mph (209 km/hr) with higher gusts.
It will remain a major hurricane as it passes close to Bermuda tonight into Friday morning. The Island is not expected to be directly hit by Fiona, but will experience hurricane force winds (74+mph), prompting a HURRICANE WARNING for the Island.
With Bermuda situated in the front right quadrant of the storm, this is where we typically see our strongest winds and heaviest rain, so flooding both from rainfall and coastal conditions is a concern.
Category 4 Hurricane Fiona is now about 300 miles southwest of Bermuda, accelerating to the north northeast at 20 mph. The forecast track has now shifted marginally to the left and the official closest point of approach is forecast to be 121 nm / 140 miles to the northwest, at around 5am Friday.
Bermuda will face strong tropical storm force winds in excess of 50 knots (58 mph), while the Marine Area and western exposures are likely to face periods of hurricane force winds near the closest approach of Fiona in the pre-dawn hours of Friday.
Storm surge and battering wave action from the southwest will affect low-lying areas and south shore beaches. As we enter the hours of darkness, preparations should now be complete for Hurricane Fiona.
Forecasts predict Hurricane Fiona will pass near the west end of the Island late Thursday, Sept 22, through early Friday, Sept 23. Winds will rapidly increase tonight and briefly become hurricane force around the closest point of its approach. They are monitoring Hurricane Fiona closely and will provide updates as they become available.
The Category 4 Hurricane Fiona draws closer to the island this afternoon, Bermuda remains under a Hurricane Warning. At 12 noon, Fiona was located about 410 miles SW of Bermuda. Fiona is confidently forecast to make a closest point of approach about 115 miles to the WNW around 5AM on Friday.
The Marine Area and elevated/exposed areas around Bermuda will experience some periods of hurricane force winds near the closest passage of Hurricane Fiona, and most of the island will feel about around 12 hours of tropical storm force winds. Storm surge and wave action may cause some coastal inundation in low-lying flood prone areas
