How 91,515 oily pennies turned into paper money

US: A Georgia man who received his last salary in more than 90,000 oil-soaked cents from a disgruntled former employer experienced a change for the better and eventually paid out his large chunk of coins.

From Fayetteville, Georgia, Andreas Flaten originally found a pile of 91,515 pennies on his driveway in March with a note that read “fuck you”.

According to interviews Flaten gave to local media, the penny stack was the job of Miles Walker, director of the A OK Walker Autoworks body shop in Peachtree City, Georgia.

Miles Walker allegedly denied Flaten his last salary and only conceded after Flaten contacted the Georgia Department of Labor.

Coinstar, known for its coin collection kiosk, came to Flaten’s aid after his story went viral. The company picked up the pile of coins that Flaten had stored in a wheelbarrow with wheels that blew off the staggering weight and gave him $ 1,000 in cash.

“It was a shock and frustrating to be paid this way, and it was an added burden that the cents were covered in an oily substance,” Flaten said in a press release. “I spent an hour or two a night cleaning up the pennies and probably only cleaned up $ 5.”

Coinstar CEO Jim Gaherity said the company “processes about 41 billion coins a year – so it was just a day job to pick up 91,000 pennies.”

Flaten’s girlfriend, Olivia Oxley, who previously posted footage of the oil-soaked coins on social media and called Walker a ‘hole’ who made ‘unnecessary comments about my friend’s daughter and was just a dick’, said celebrated the coin conversion on Instagram. A local CBS segment shared with Flaten and Jeff Lail, head of North American operations for Coinstar.

“We’ll take it directly to our processing partner, and it’s cleaned, wrapped and counted and recycled,” Lail said of the large coin mass.

Walker, the former employer of Flaten, is accused of creating a hostile work environment by other employees, who said he had advanced paychecks in front of workers and humiliated female staff. Walker called Flaten a “fucking weenie” by local media over the strange penny saga.

An OK Walker Autoworks received a flood of negative Yelp and Google reviews in the wake of the odd penny saga.
