Haiti:400 prisoners escape from prison,25 dead

More than 400 prisoners have escaped from a Haiti prison (JAIL) and 25 people, including the jail director, have died in the shooting incident. The government of Haiti said on Friday that the incident occurred on Thursday in the Crua de Booke Civil Jail, located northeast of the capital Port au Prince.

60 prisoners have been apprehended and the rest is being searched. Jail director Paul Joseph Hector has also died in the shooting incident.

There were 1542 prisoners in the jail at the time of the occurrence. This prison was built by Canada in 2012. In the year 2014, more than 300 prisoners escaped from this prison.

Officials stated that gang people took out the incident to free criminal Arnell Joseph. Joseph was jailed in 2019 on charges of rape, kidnapping and murder. After escaping from prison, he was running away on a motorcycle but was killed in an encounter with the police.

Officials said that 60 prisoners have been apprehended and the remaining are being searched. A commission has been set up to examine how the prisoners jumped from the jail. Jail director Paul Joseph Hector was also shot in the shooting incident.

Local people said that they had seen many armed men firing bullets at the jail’s security personnel before the detainees escaped. Long after the firing started, the sounds of gunfire remained to be heard inside the jail. Haiti’s Président Jovenel Moïse tweeted on Friday, condemning the incident of the prisoners’ escape and firing and asked people to be patient.
