Guyanese team stands at 4th place after 2021 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad’s first day

After the first day of the 2021 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad, the chess team of Guyana finished in fourth place. The Chess Olympiad is currently underway. The event will continue from August 20 to September 15, 2021, which the International Chess Federation is organising.

Guyana: After the first day of the 2021 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad, the chess team of Guyana finished in fourth place. The Chess Olympiad is currently underway. The event will continue from August 20 to September 15, 2021, which the International Chess Federation is organising. 

On yesterday’s opening day, Guyana beat Togo 4-2, the Cayman Islands 5 and one half to half and Antigua and Barbuda 5-1. With this, the island’s chess team is in a tie amidst Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti with 14 and one-half points. 

Despite Guyana, the other three teams won their three matches. As a result, Guyana is in fourth place after the tie-break. 

With a rating of 1529, Keron Sandiford was the top Guyana player when the FIDE Online Rapid World Cup competition ended yesterday. In the U18 category, Sandiford finished the competition with four wins from the ten contested rounds.

His wins came in rounds three, five, seven and 10. In round three, Sandiford defeated Aidan Mart (1262) and got the better of Daniel Doria, unrated, in round five.

This year, a total of 155 teams from the different nations across the globe are participating in the Chess Olympiad. Last year, the event was organised by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) and hosted by Chess.com.

It was held between July 24 and August 30, 2020, and was the first Chess Olympiad to take place online amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

As per the criteria, the teams in the event are made up of six main players, including –

  • Two open spots,
  • Two women,
  • At least one player U-20 (born in 2001 or later),
  • At least one girl U-20 (born in 2001 or later).

Teams may also have up to six reserves, including – 

  • Two open spots,
  • Two women,
  • One U-20 open,
  • One girl U-20.
