Guyanese government rejects the promotion list of Guyana Police Force

The Government of Guyana has rejected a list of purported promotions of the Guyana Police Force members as unlawful and illegal, which the Police Service Commission provided.

Guyana: The Government of Guyana has rejected a list of purported promotions of the Guyana Police Force members as unlawful and illegal, which the Police Service Commission provided.

Earlier this month, the President of Guyana – Dr Irfaan Ali, suspended the Police Service Commission. This decision by the President of Guyana was delivered to every member of the Police Service Commission via a letter.

The government stated that the decision which the President announces could only be cancelled, withdrawn or set aside only by the President himself or by a court of competent jurisdiction and added, “No person, let alone, a constitutional commission, will be allowed to become judge, jury and executioner in our constitutional democracy. The Rule of Law does not allow it.”

As per the government, the effort of the Police Service Commission, therefore, to revoke, violate and despise the decision of the President amounts to an audacity to the highest executive office.

The government of Guyana, in a statement, cited, “If anyone had any doubts about the independence and rectitude of this grouping who constitute the Police Service Commission, those doubts should now be put to rest.”

The statement issued by the Guyanese government states that it must be made clear that, as per that ruling, the purported list of promotions issued by the Police Service Commission is not legitimate as published by some media organisations.

“In the circumstances, this purported list of promotions of members of the Guyana Police Force will be ignored,” the government added.

Despite this, recently, the President of Guyana attended the Eleventh virtual meeting of The Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on The CARICOM Single Market and Economy – CSME, in which he provided an update on the Special Ministerial Taskforce – MTF on Food Production and Food Security.

Last week, the Guyanese government also withdrew the name of Haiti from the free-visa list.
