Guyana receives donations of Infants Care Kits from PAHO to enhance better maternal

Guyana: The Ministry of Health (MOH) of Guyana received a donation of a quantity of Midwifery Kits, Infants Care and Obstetrics Packages from the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) to enhance better maternal and child health services across the board.

The donation was financed by the Canada Global Affairs Project and aimed to improve the health of adolescent women across the ten administrative regions of Guyana.

Dr Luis Cordina, Representative of the PAHO/WHO Guyana Country Office during his brief remarks said that his Organisation will be working along with the MOH in the regions to assist adolescents and pregnant mothers through empowerment and ensuring that they receive the support and services needed.

Meanwhile, Counselor attached to the Canadian High Commission, Ms Jessica Teasdale explained that the project is geared towards educating and empowering young women to make the best choices for themselves.

“We hope that through this handing over of materials we will assist in making progressive and substantial changes”, Teasdale said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony expressed that the donation is a timely one which will help to enhance the programme delivery. The Minister highlighted that one of the focuses of the Ministry is health promotion engagement among adolescent girls to reduce teenage pregnancy while empowering them to make the right decisions.

“This is something that the Ministry in collaboration with other government agencies has been working on. We want to provide better services at every Health centre; this is to ensure that they are properly equipped with the necessary instruments and materials”, Minister Anthony stated.

He explained that the programme is- going and the provision of equipment will boost the initiative.

Also present at this handing-over ceremony was Dr Farrah December, Support Officer of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), the Advisor of Family and Community Health attached to the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation(PAHO/WHO), and other officials.
