This year’s global theme is ‘Only One Earth‘, which draws attention towards playing our role effectively while living in perfect harmony with nature – without proving a burden on it.
Locally, Environmental Day activities were held under the theme ‘Celebrating Only One earth as One Guyana ‘.
During the walk, President Irfaan Ali planted a ‘Bajan’ mahogany tree in the National Park at the conclusion of the World Environment Day Green Walk ceremony.
President Irfaan Ali noted that the symbolic nature of the tree is that it comes from one of our sister states in CARICOM, Barbados, which is severely affected by climate change, just like Guyana.
“But the resilience of the mahogany in strength and life span and more importantly, because somebody may ask why not a Guyana tree, but more importantly, it is the understanding that we can only tackle this global issue in partnership; the symbol of partnership, unison collective action and collective voice on the issue of climate change.”
