Guyana: President Irfaan Ali hands over cheque of $3m to Whyaka Village for water treatment facility

Guyana: Dr Irfaan Ali handed over a cheque for $3m to the Mainstay/Whyaka Village for a water treatment facility.

The Head of State made the presentation while delivering the feature address at the village’s Amerindian Heritage celebration this afternoon.

He announced that the Government has set aside funds and machinery to expand Guyana’s “best pineapple” production in the area.

The President also updated residents on the projects earmarked for the community, and disclosed that the first two marine cages have arrived in the country and will be set up after the heritage celebrations.

Construction on the poultry facility has also started.

“We do not only want to build infrastructure, we want to build activities around the infrastructure.”

Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh; the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd; the Minister of Amerindian Affairs, the Honourable Pauline Sukhai were the attendees. 

President Dr Irfaan Ali and President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Abdulla Shahid, engaged with members of the President’s Youth Advisory Council yesterday. 

 In his remarks, Mr Shahid commended President Ali for creating the avenue to involve young people in the process of nation-building.

“I am delighted that the President has provided this opportunity for the youth of Guyana to contribute to the nation now.” 

He also challenged Council members to ‘think outside the box”.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation, Hugh Todd; Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Caroline Rodrigues, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Yeşim Oruç, were also at the meeting.

Dr Irfaan Ali participated in a few games of beach volleyball at Mainstay/Whyaka on Saturday afternoon.

After delivering the featured address at the village’s Amerindian Heritage celebrations, President Ali mingled with residents and visitors before he played volleyball with members of his staff from the Press and Publicity, Protocol and Presidential Guards departments.

The Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, the Nigel Dharamlall, also participated while other ministers and government officials enjoyed the games on the sideline.
