Guyana: President Irfaan Ali announces $100,000 cash grant for child with disability

Guyana: President Dr Irfaan Ali announced a $100,000 one-off cash grant for each child with a disability on Friday, June 3, 2022. The Head of State and First Lady Arya Ali made the announcement while entertaining hundreds of children with disabilities and their parents at State House.

Upon the request of the President, parents voiced their concerns and made recommendations.

After assessing the bulk of their concerns, President Ali committed to procuring vehicles for the care centres countrywide; to working with the Ministry of Education in designing a programme to train more special needs teachers, while he promised to put systems in place to ensure that special needs children automatically qualify for public assistance.

Earlier, Dr Irfaan Ali conducted an on-the-ground inspection of the ongoing road works on the East Bank of Demerara this afternoon. The President, accompanied by a team of technical staff from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) and the Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, made his first stop at the location for the new highway from Eccles to Diamond.

Currently, the road is 25% completed and is on a strict timeline for completion. The first section, which will allow traffic to flow from Eccles to the Providence access road is 30% completed and is expected to be completed by the end of July.

The second stop the President made was at the Haags Bosch access road which is undergoing rehabilitative works.

Currently, over 1,300 metres of the concrete drain is being built to allow for the road to be rehabilitated and extended into a three-lane road from the Mandela to Eccles access road to the Windsor Estates access road.

These road projects, when completed, are expected to provide significant relief to the flow of traffic during peak hours along with the East Bank of Demerara.
