Guyana police arrest taxi driver over illegal possession of 38 revolvers, five rounds of ammunition

A 38-year-old taxi driver of 'B' Field, Sophia, was yesterday (Tuesday, August 22) arrested after he was busted by police ranks with an unlicensed .38 revolver, five matching rounds of ammunition and a spent shell.

Guyana: A 38-year-old taxi driver of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, was yesterday (Tuesday, August 22) arrested after he was busted by police ranks with an unlicensed .38 revolver, five matching rounds of ammunition and a spent shell.

The ranks who were acting on intel went to Norton Street and Mandela Avenue at about 06:30 hrs, where they intercepted a white Toyota 212 motorcar bearing registration number plates HB 9112, driven by the 38-year-old man along with two occupants.

A search was conducted on the driver by the ranks, which led to the discovery of the revolver and the matching rounds on his person.

The man, when questioned if he was a licensed firearm holder, said no. After the 38-year-old man was told of the offence committed and cautioned, he reportedly told the ranks that he had bought the firearm in the interior for his protection.

The man was arrested and escorted along with the motorcar to the East La Penitence Police Station. He remains in custody as investigations continue. 

The crime rate in Guyana is witnessing an upsurge day by day. Various incidents such as murder, kidnapping and trafficking etc. have been reported in the country for the last few days. 

Michael ‘Mikey’ Singh, aged 57 years of Middle Road, Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, was yesterday charged by police for the offence *Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking* – _Contrary to Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, Chapter 10:10.

The accused appeared before Magistrate R. Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court 1, where the charge was read to him.

The man pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced to six (6) months imprisonment.

Four armed bandits earlier tonight reportedly robbed a supermarket in 5th Street Industry, ECD at around 20:40h. According to an eyewitness, one of the men placed a gun to the head of the driver that sped away and ended up in a ditch through the street. It is unclear if he was injured.
