Guyana launches Presidential Youth Advisory Council on International Youth Day

The Board of Industrial Training participated and informed the gathering, made up of mostly youth, on the delivery of TVET programs and other services of the training agency.

Guyana: On the auspicious occasion of International Youth Day, Guyana launched the Presidential Youth Advisory Council, followed by a small sensitization exercise held by several Government ministries and agencies.

The Youth Advisory Council initiative is a PPP/C Manifesto promise to allow young people the opportunity to help shape their future.

Earlier, Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton and a team comprised of Senior Technical Officer at BIT, Bevon Sheperd, Region Five and Six, Technical Officers Jennel Washington and Tina Ghansham, visited Moraikobai Village, Region Five to introduce technical and vocational programmes offered by BIT to the residents.

A meeting was held on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, with the minister and his team in attendance, accompanied by Deputy Toshoa, Jeff Bonaparte Depth and other members of the Moraikobai Village Council.

The villagers were informed of the services offered by BIT and selected several programmes of interest. However, in September 2022, three courses, namely, Commercial Food Preparation, Garment Construction and Boat Building, will commence for a total of forty-seven (47) prospective trainees who filled out application forms during the ministerial visit.

Besides this, Trinidadian National Energy Skills Centre (NESC) Technical Institute, on Thursday, August 11, 2022, engaged the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) to discuss future collaboration to heighten the delivery of technical and vocational training in Guyana, which will contribute to the oil and gas industry.

Chief Executive Officer of BIT, Richard Maughn, Human Resource Officer, Melinda Kelly and Senior Technical Officers, Bevon Sheperd and Leon Greaves held discussions with Dean of NESC Technical Institute, Indra Ramroop- Ramkissoon, with plans to meet soon to formalize working together.

NESC Technical Institute was established in 1997 and has prepared thousands of graduates for high-demand, skilled jobs in the energy and industrial sector. Besides Trinidad and Tobago, graduates of the NESC work throughout the Caribbean and as far afield as North America and the Middle East.
