The Government of Guyana, together with the Government of Austria, VAMED- Engineering and the British High Commission, turned the sod to commemorate the beginning of the construction of a state-of-the-art Specialized Paediatric and Maternal Hospital in Goedverwagting East Coast Demerara.

Guyana: The Government of Guyana, together with the Government of Austria, VAMED- Engineering and the British High Commission, turned the sod to commemorate the beginning of the construction of a state-of-the-art Specialized Paediatric and Maternal Hospital in Goedverwagting East Coast Demerara.

This €149 million (149 million euros) project which is the brainchild of His Excellency, President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, is a major aspect of his vision for an excellent and exemplary healthcare sector in Guyana. The realization of this vision was made possible through a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and the Republic of Austria in 2018.

The project is the first project in Guyana’s history to be financed by the United Kingdom Export Finance agency (UKEF). 

President Mohamed Irfaan Ali , in his feature address, expressed gratitude to the Government of Austria for being a part of such a monumental milestone in Guyana’s development and invited them to remain close friends as they engage in other agreements as they seek to enhance both countries.

In his remarks at the simple ceremony, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony applauded the President for his steadfast efforts in the development of the healthcare sector and the country by extension. Minister Anthony also mentioned that this is the largest public health investment in the history of Guyana and it will yield great returns by offering world-class clinical care to those seeking maternal, neonatal and paediatric care.

Present at the ceremony were members of the Cabinet, the British High Commissioner to Guyana, Ms Jane Miller, Austrian Trade Commissioner for Columbia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana & the Caribbean; Dr. Andreas Schmid, Managing Director & Member of the Board -VAMED Engineering GmbH; Angelo Rizzuti, Head of Residency Programme- Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dr Natasha France, Head of the Paediatric Department; Dr Tarik Davidson, other medical personnel and invited guests.
