Guyana: Georgetown School of Nursing Students Society hosts day of sports event

The event saw the participation of students from the Georgetown School of Nursing, New Amsterdam School of Nursing, Charles Rosa School of Nursing and St Joseph Mercy School of Nursing.

Guyana: After two years of cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the much-anticipated annual sporting event of the Georgetown School of Nursing Students Society finally kicked off this morning at the Guyana Defence Force Ground, Camp Ayanganna, Georgetown.

The event saw the participation of students from the Georgetown School of Nursing, New Amsterdam School of Nursing, Charles Rosa School of Nursing and St Joseph Mercy School of Nursing.

Before declaring the event opened, Deputy Director of Health Sciences Education Chandroutie Persaud congratulated the organisers on pulling off the successful event. She encouraged the students to have a fun-filled day while encouraging them to enjoy themselves safely.

This momentous event will see over two hundred (200) participants competing in approximately 17 exciting games throughout the day while vying for the champion boy and girl trophy along with a victory school of the year.

Also present at this morning’s event were Stacey Boatswain, President of Georgetown School of Nursing Student Society; Kim Bristol, Health Education Officer, and Tutors attached to the various schools across the country.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Malcolm Watkins on Thursday took time away from his office to personally inspect the progress on the construction works currently being done at the Operating Theatre in Aishalton, Region Nine (Upper Takutu- Upper Essequibo).

He was accompanied by Officers from the Regional Health Services Department, Engineers attached to the Ministry of Health and the Regional Health Officer (RHO) of Region Nine, Dr Cedel Mc Watt.

During his interactions with the team, the Permanent Secretary (PS) emphasized the importance of completing the project at its stipulated time to deliver timely and quality health care services to residents in the area and neighbouring villages.

In keeping with the Government of Guyana’s mandate to ensure that all communities receive quality and equitable healthcare, the PS reminded the regional staff and the contractor that they must work together to ensure the project is built to quality of excellence.

During his time on the ground, he also met with the staff of the Aishalton Regional Hospital where he listened to their suggestions and concerns regarding health care in the community.

The PS assured the staff that he has been providing extra support to Regional Health Services to ensure the objectives of the region are achieved.

In concluding his one-day visit, Watkins thanked the staff for their warm welcome, hard work and support, over the years. He further saluted the women in health for their strong commitment and resilience.

He also pleaded his full support in all ventures while assuring them that he and his team are working beyond the call of duty each day to ensure the Health Ministry provides good health to all.
