Guyana: Following a misunderstanding 17-year-old sets his grandmother’s house on fire

A shocking and weird incident came from Guyana, where a 17-year-old boy, who purportedly on Thursday morning sets his grandmother's house on fire at No. 60 Village, Corentyne Berbice house, amid a misunderstanding.

The Guyanese Police is searching for the boy. As per the local reports, the grandmother scolded the teenager about his behaviour, during which an argument ensued; however, the grandmother subsequently left the house.

After which, the teenager used the opportunity to set the two-bedroom wooden house on fire. According to the statement issued by the Police officials, a kerosene stove was lit by the 17-year-old and placed under his grandmother’s bed.

The flames quickly inundated the mattress and destroyed the house within minutes. Nothing could be saved while no one was injured.

The Police further informed that a CCTV camera in the area was there, but no one was seen, and checks were made for the suspect, but he was not located. In the meantime, the sources were informed that the fire service did not show up at the scene; it is not clear if they were contacted.

In addition, Four women in Guyana lost their lives amid the deadliest COVID-19 pandemic taking the total death toll to 606. The deaths reported are a 69-year-old, a 78-year-old, and an 82-year-old – all from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) and a 56-year-old of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

The island country reported 151 new COVID-19 infections from – Region Two (six cases), Region Three (12 cases), Region Four (101 cases), Region Five (six cases), Region Six (20 cases), Region Nine (four cases) and Region 10 (two cases).

On Thursday, the Health Ministry noted that patients were admitted with COVID-19 like symptoms and died while receiving care at medical institutions.

As per the report of the Health Ministry, there are a total of 22 people in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit – (ICU), 109 people are in institutional isolation, 1,510 people have isolated themselves in their homes, and six people are in institutional quarantine.
