A businessman named Jones was sentenced to life imprisonment with the chance of parole after serving 20 years for killing a 19-year-old Nyron Vyphuis in 2018. The 19-year-old attempted to save Jones’sJones’s wife from getting assaulted by him.

Justice – Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court sentenced life imprisonment to Anthony, formerly of Circuit Ville, Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway. Earlier this month, Anthony was charged for murder but opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of killing. Senior State Counsel Lisa Cave was the representative of State while attorney-at-law Stanley Moore, SC, represented Jones.

Anthony, in his confession on 13, 2018, stated that he had committed a crime by unlawfully killing Vyphuis by stabbing him to death. While addressing and pleading with the High Court for a second chance, Anthony cited that he was intoxicated on that day in question and apologised to the victim’s family.

Anthony asserted, “I ask for forgiveness; I accept my faults.” But Justice Kissoon, while sentencing him to life imprisonment, cited that he has ruthlessly and violently ended the life of Nyron Vyphuis, who at the time was just a teenager.

The Justice considered that the crime was a willful act; a deathly weapon was used to carry out the ridiculous crime and the factor of domestic violence.

The Day of Incident –

As per the local media reports, when an argument happened between Jones and his wife, they both were at their liquor shop located at Yarrowkabra. Then during the argument, Jones attempted to attack his wife, when 19-year-old intervened, and so, Jones armed himself with a knife & then stabbed the teen to his stomach. After the incident took place, Nyron was immediately taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where Doctor declared him dead.

Guyana’s Crime rate –

The murder rate of Guyana is approximately four times higher than the United States. The island country is one among the nations who have the fourth-highest murder rate in the region of South America, behind Colombia, Venezuela & Brazil.
