
Castries, Saint Lucia: Gros Islet Under 19 Cricket Team crowned champions of the Saint Lucia National Cricket Association/Sandals 50 Overs Cricket Cup. The team defeated Central Castries with a convincing seven wicket victory.
Alton Crafton took to Facebook and shared glimpses of the matches. He is the coach of the Saint Lucia’s cricket team and extended congratulations to the winning team. He said that THIS IS THE 5TH YEAR IN THE 6 YEARS OF SANDALS SPONSORSHIP THAT THE GROS ISLET UNDER 19 CRICKET TEAM EMERGED CHAMPIONS OF THE SANDALS CUP.
On Sunday, March 12, at the Gros Islet Playing Field, in the tournament’s Grand Final, Gros Islet, led by a five wicket haul from ROYCE PAUL and a century from KHAN ELCOCK, earned a convincing seven wicket victory over fellow finalist Central Castries of Saint Lucia.
Central Castries Under 19 team winning the toss and batting first made 242 all out in 48 overs with Stephen Abraham making a well-played half century.
Abraham made a delightful 82 which included 11 fours and three sixes in 92 balls. Other useful contributions came from Desne Gidharry with, 37, Amari Venner, 24, captain; Ackeem Auguste, 22 and Jaden Florent, 14.
The Gros Islet of Saint Lucia Under 19 bowling was led by off-spinner; Royce Paul with 5 for 29 in 10 overs, off-spinner; Lee John with 3 for 36 in 10 overs and Leg spinner; Leon Alexander with 1 for 41 in 8 overs.
In response, Gros Islet Under 19, led by a remarkable century from KHAN ELCOCK, easily got to the target, finishing on 244 for 3 in only 35.4 overs. Khan Elcock made a mature 104, including 18 fours and a solitary six.
Other valiant contributions came from, Johnathan Daniel with 39, Ryan Goodman with 36, captain Tarrique Edward with 17 not out and Sanjay Francis with nine not out.
The wicket takers for Central Castries were; Thai Harris, Amari Venner and captain; Ackeem Auguste with 1 wicket each.
RESULT: GROS ISLET UNDER 19 CRICKET TEAM DEFEATED CENTRAL CASTRIES UNDER 19 CRICKET TEAM BY 7 WICKETS.
The Northern Cluster Grassroots/ Ministry of Youth Development and Sports/ Gros Islet Community After-school Cricket Training Program continued on Thursday March 9, 2023 with a general training session at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.
