Grenada: Two Kayak Athletes receive sports scholarship
Hillsborough, Carriacou, September 9th, 2022-“Go out there and ensure you make full use of the scholarship opportunity given to you to further develop your sporting career.”
Those words of advice given by Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, Tevin Andrews, to two of latest athletes that are preparing to travel to Jamaica.
Dylan Logan, who is from Petite Martinique and attended the Hillsborough Secondary School, and Bishop’s College student Alliyah Gittens have received sports scholarships to attend Jamaica’s Edwin Allen High School. Logan has shown great potential in shot put and discus throw, and Gittens is an outstanding netballer.
Minister Andrews urged them to remain focused and be successful in reaching their career goals. The Grenada Government, through the Ministry of Sports, provides a monthly stipend for athletes studying overseas.
Senior Coach in the Division of Sports within the Ministry of Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs, Sebastian Stiell, who has played a major role in the development of athletes on the island, said his Division is happy to see Logan and Gittens joining other Kayak athletes, who have been giving similar student-athlete scholarship opportunities.
Meanwhile Ashareah Enoe, along with Jamora Alves, who were among the first set of Kayak athletes to receive scholarship in Jamaica, have been able to secure full university scholarship to attend colleges in the United States.
Enoe is attending Highland University and Alves is at St. John’s University.General Manager Christopher Husbands led a team on an official visit to the Honourable Tevin Andrew, Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government on Thursday September 8th, 2022.
The team comprised Assistant Manager of Planning and Development Lendon Bullen and Communications Supervisor Jamila Lewis.
