Grenada: Kirani James disqualified from men’s 400m final in World Athletics Championship

Grenada's Kirani James has ended his 2023 attempt to add another silver medal to his collection at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest.

Grenada: Grenada’s Kirani James has ended his 2023 attempt to add another medal to his collection at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest. He was disqualified from Thursday’s men’s 400m final, as a result of lane infringement after finishing in 5th position with a time of 44.52.

The Grenadian quarter-miler ended his campaign in Budapest in 5th position; however was subsequently DQ for lane infringement (17.3.1).

However, it must be noted that since 2011, there have been ten (10) World Athletics Championships and Summer Olympics combined. Grenada’s Kirani James has competed in nine (9) of those (missed the 2017 season due to illness) and has reached the finals of all nine (9) events.

That’s the most finals reached in global meets in 400M history. 

Earlier records of Kirani James

  • In James’ previous eight ( global Men’s 400-meter events: James has medaled in 6 of them. 
  • He secured Gold (2012), Silver (2016), and Bronze (2021) in the last three Olympics, 
  • James secured Gold (2011), Bronze (2015) and Silver (2022) at the World Athletic Championships.

Friday August 25th:

  • 4:05am – 100m decathlon
  • 4:55am- Long Jump decathlon
  • 6:20am- Shot Put decathlon
  • 12:30pm- High Jump decathlon
  • 3:05pm – 400m decathlon

Saturday, August 26th:

  • 4:05 am- 110m hurdles decathlon
  • 5:00am and 6:05am- Discus decathlon
  • 8:00am – Pole Vault decathlon
  • 1:05 pm and 2:10 pm – Javelin Throw decathlon
  • 3:25pm- 1500m decathlon

Grenada’s 400m World Champion Kirani James runs out of Lane 4 today in the world championship in Budapest.

The race was won by Jamaica’s Antonio Watson in 44.22. Nevertheless, The Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture commends the World and Olympic Champion for his remarkable performance and representation on the World Championships stage.
