Government has no plan to deal with COVID-19 surge: SKNLP

The opposition party of St Kitts and Nevis, SKNLP, has stated that the government does not have any effective plan in how to deal with the influx of the COVID-19 positive cases in the country.

Saint Kitts and Nevis: The opposition party of St Kitts and Nevis, SKNLP, has stated that the government does not have any effective plan in how to deal with the influx of the COVID-19 positive cases in the country.

The opposition further stated that “The rising number of positive cases is causing great alarm within the Federation. There is much speculation surrounding these cases, and the government has offered little to no solution for the people. Instead of creating calm, order, and reassurance, they have succeeded in creating panic and hysteria.”

SKNLP further added that there are discussions about the re-opening of the borders which means that there’s a higher possibility of a spike in the COVID-19 cases and this would also increase community spread and it seems like the government do not have any plan to deal with it.

“It seems the only focus of the government has been to increase fearmongering to bully persons into taking the AstraZeneca vaccine, completely overlooking the public’s right to choose,” – opposition added.

Besides this, the opposition party pointed out that they never have seen or heard the Health Minister since the beginning of the outbreak and there has been no clear directive on how the government intends to manage the outbreak and this has contributed greatly to the frustration of the people.

With this, the opposition has also extended empathy to the patients and their families who are fighting against COVID-19 and has been the victim of the recent surge in the cases.

The opposition party also added, “What is clear, is that we all need to focus on ways of protecting ourselves and our families. Continued exercise of the COVID-19 protocols such as frequent washing and sanitization of hands, wearing of masks and social distancing, as well as boosting your immune systems are strategies you can continue to use to protect yourselves and your loved ones if you do not desire to be vaccinated.”

“The SKNLP maintains the stance that we are not against vaccination because we understand the importance and significance of vaccination. We firmly believe that the public reserves the right to choose whether they desire to be vaccinated or not and urge the public to make an informed decision ensuring that you research thoroughly,” opposition asserted.

Further concluding, SKNLP has asked people to be more careful and follow the COVID-19 protocols to protect themselves.
