GDF to sanction soldiers who refuse to get COVID vaccine

According to the reports, the GDF - Guyana Defence Force, in an internal notice to the Commanders, has issued a directive that states that GDF would sanction the officers and soldiers who refuse to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.

The notice states that all the GDF members who are not agreeing to take the COVID-19 vaccine would be interviewed and further mentioned the disincentives that would be sanctioned by force.

The notice further states that only vaccinated officers and soldiers would be served meals first at the bases, and only the vaccinated officers and soldiers would be authorised on transportation pertaining to the GDF.

The notice also provides instructions to the Commanders to rearrange the barracks at several bases in such a way that the vaccinated officers and soldiers would be housed distinctly from those who have not taken their vaccination dose. These measures would be in effect from Monday onwards.

In spite, government officials have stated that getting the COVID-19 vaccine is not compulsory.

Concerned about the increasing COVID-19 cases on the island, the vice-president of Guyana asserted, “There was no experimental evidence to prove that shifting the current curfew hours would reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.”

With this, the vice-president has also requested the citizens to get themselves vaccinated against the coronavirus.

According to the statistics, there are a total of 1.53 lakh COVID-19 doses given, around 2,800 individuals have been fully vaccinated, which is 0.4% of the population vaccinated.

The island reported 271 new COVID-19 virus cases on 22 May 2021, taking the total number of cases to 16,014, out of which 13,967 individuals have been fully recovered.

Guyana also reported six deaths on 22 May 2021 due to the deadly mutant taking the total number of death rate to 371.
