Belize: According to the sources, gas stations of several areas of Belize nation are suffering fuel shortage.

It is suspected that this shortage comes as the United States faces fuel shortage after the ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline as Belize purchases fuel from the US.

A survey was conducted by the BBN regarding the fuel shortage, and according to the BBN-Breaking Belize news, several stations across Belize city are running out of one or more types of fuels, and either are running hypercritically low on fuels.

There are also fuel shortages in Orange Walk and the southern areas of the island. Although yet, there is no official statement given regarding the fuel shortages, but several reports of possible fuel shortage on the island are being circulated since last week.

The ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline took place two weeks back. This was a cyber attack that blocked the flow of oil. The FBI had confirmed that a relatively new ransomware gang named Darkside of Russia was behind this attack.

The Colonial pipeline transports fuel supplies to nearly half of the east coast of the US. It is considered that the hackers could have been in the IT network of the Colonial pipeline for weeks and months before executing this cyber attack.

Colonial had paid hackers a ransom amount of $4.4 million in bitcoin. The company officials have also stated that they would be spending – tens of millions to restore its system over the following months.

After this ransomware attack, several regions of the US faced fuel shortages most likely in the southeastern and mid – Atlantic states. The pipeline was shut for around six days.

The service of fuel in the US was resumed on Saturday, however, the nation has to prioritize national demand for fuel which could mean that the situation in Belize would worsen in the upcoming days.
