US: A former US military sniper has killed 4 persons, including a woman and her three-month-old son in her arms, before handing them over to Central Florida police.

The suspect, named as Bryan Riley, 33, also injured an 11-year-old girl who underwent surgery for seven gunshot wounds, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a press conference on Sunday.

Riley, who had no association to the victims, had an intense shootout with police before giving up. He later tried to grab a police officer’s gun while being treated in hospital for his own gunshot wound, before being shot again, Judd said.

Riley, a veteran of the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, worked as a bodyguard and security guard.

Judd said his girlfriend told investigators he had post-traumatic stress disorder and occasional depression, and a week ago, his psychlogical health worsened and he started talking to God.

“At one point he told our investigators, ‘They pleaded for their lives and I killed them anyway,'” Judd told.

Riley further told sheriff’s deputies that he was high on methamphetamine.

The attacker appeared randomly for the first time on Saturday night in the house where the shooting took place, but we made nonsensical statements but left the police when the police responded.

He returned early Sunday to kill a 40-year-old man and the 33-year-old mother and her baby, Judd stated. In the apartment next door, he also murdered the 62-year-old mother of the woman.

“On top of that, he shot the family dog dead if he’s not bad enough,” Judd said.

Delegates responding to reports of two bursts of automatic rifle fire showed up to dress the suspect unarmed outside, wearing camouflage and body armour. Riley then went inside again and ‘we heard another flight, and a woman was screaming and a baby was moaning’, Judd said.

A shootout ensued before he came out defenceless and was detained.

“It would have been nice if he came out with a gun … We would have shot him a lot. But he did not because he was a coward,” Judd said. “If anyone decides to give up, we will arrest him peacefully.”
