St Kitts and Nevis: Former Premier of Nevis and Ambassador Vance Winkworth Amory passed away on April 2, 2022. He was admitted to the hospital of London, United Kingdom due to his suffering from a disease – which is currently unknown, where he was declared dead.
Born on May 22 1949, Amory belongs to Rawlins Village in St Kitts and Nevis. He completed all his studies in Nevis and was an active member of the local church since his childhood. Amory was also a renowned West Indies cricketer who played for the Combined Islands and the Leeward Islands, but some injuries forced him to leave cricket forever.
He completed his schooling at Charlestown Secondary School and went to Barbados to pursue his further studies and obtained the Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill Campus.
In 1973, Amory returned back to St Kitts and Nevis to continue teaching students at Charlestown Secondary School. From 1974 to 1977, he took on the additional responsibility as acting headmaster while fulfilling his role as a teacher at Gingerland Secondary School.
So, just at the age of 28, he became the headmaster of Charlestown Secondary School. He worked tirelessly to improve the education status in St Kitts and Nevis during his days as a teacher and principal.
Further, he remained a bank manager of St Kitts and Nevis and Anguilla National Bank between 1981 and 1983 for a short period of time. During this time, he aided many individuals in obtaining well-needed financing.
Deciding to move forward, Amory has secured the position in the finance department of Nevis Island Government after clearing the exams for it in 1983. He was further promoted to Permanent Secretary in Finance under the premiership of Dr Simeon Daniel.
From the position of Permanent Secretary, he learned the ins and outs of governance. He finally decided to sacrifice himself for the betterment of Nevis, and that’s why he took study leave in September 1986 to pursue his study at the University of the Virgin Islands, St Croix Campus.
During this period of time, he made a political party named Concerned Citizens Movement, and just in 5 years, he took off for new destinations and altitudes with determination to serve as Premier of Nevis island.
He became the Premier of Nevis on June 2, 1992, and left the position on July 11, 2006. Amory again held the position of Premier on January 23, 2013 till 2017.
Following the Team Unity 2015 General Election victory, Amory was appointed Senior Minister and Minister of Nevis Affairs, Labour, Social Security, and Ecclesiastical Affairs on February 22, 2015.
People could see his transformations of the face of Nevis in many facets as he played a significant role in the development of the country.
Further, in 2017, Amory endorsed Mark Brantley as a Premier of Nevis and entrusted him with vision of CCM. While expressing his trust, Amory stated that Brantley always worked for the upliftment of the residents of Nevis.
Now, Brantley is fulfilling all his expectations as a Premier. His policies, plans, and numerous decisions have always remained towards the growth of the residents of the country.
Various decisions such as the instalment of CCTV surveillance and significant investment in the Health and Industrial Sector showed him as a great leader for the country.
