Zambia: They say everyone harbors a secret of some sort. But what if you are a national politician? Are your secrets yours to keep, or does the nation have the right to know about your past? Just ask Hakainde Hichilema. For years, he has done nothing but lied to the country about his past. Did you know that Hichilema has a secret child? Well, now you know.

Ever since he entered politics of Zambia in 2006 when he became the president of the UPND, Hichilema has repeatedly claimed that he has three children, a daughter and two sons.

In an interview for The Post in 2006, Hichilema said, “My wife and I have three children. A daughter Miyanda who is twelve years old. We have a son Habwela who is nine years old, and we have another son Chikonka who is six years old.”

Hichilema repeated this claim often, including in interviews, official documents and public speeches. According to the official 2016 campaign site of the UPND candidate for Zambia president, Hichilema “is married to Mutinta and together they have three children—a girl and two boys.” But this is not the truth.

For more than 10 years now, Hichilema has blatantly lied to the public about his family. He has lied in his public statements, committed forgery in his legal declarations and deceived his followers. He has been dishonest about his own children.

It is time for the public to know that Hakainde Hichilema has a secret daughter, Chi Chi Hichilema, whom he has kept hidden away from the Zambian public since her birth.

Miyanda, the eldest child and, so far, Hichilema’s only recognized daughter, was born in 1995. Chi Chi, who bears her father’s family name, was born soon after that. Hichilema is her natural father, but she is not the daughter of Mutinta, Hakainde Hichilema’s wife.

Chi Chi grew up in obscurity, hidden away in secrecy at the Hichilema family farm. In 2013, with the support of one of HH’s friends, Gerry Muuka, she was sent to study in the United States at Murray State University, following in the footsteps of her sister, Miyanda, who was already studying there.

Shockingly, although she is his daughter, Hichilema considers Chi Chi to be a burden for his political ambitions and an embarrassment to his name. For this reason, he has forbidden her from travelling to Zambia, even for vacation. In fact, she was allowed to come home only once in the last four years.

Does Chi Chi Hichilema not have human rights? And why does HH treat his own daughter this way? Does he lack morals?

Clearly, he is embarrassed by her, and he is ashamed to tell Zambian citizens the truth about his past.

Interestingly, Chi Chi’s existence would have remained a secret if a reporter from a small student radio station at Murray had not interviewed the Hichilema sisters.

In March 2015, WKMS Radio broadcast the interview with Chi Chi and Miyanda, the only two Zambian students at Murray State University. The girls spoke about how they ended up at the university, what they think of Murray and how to greet someone in Tonga.

They also spoke about their life as a family in Zambia and their common father. “Our dad always tells us that education is the best equalizer,” said Miyanda, adding that “he is a businessman, a farmer and he is an economist. He is a little bit of everything.”

What is astounding is that Hichilema has never even suggested that he has a secret daughter. He has bragged about paying school fees for “20 children,” but always stressed that they were children “who are not mine.”
Chi Chi is a beautiful and intelligent woman. But she was forced to seclude herself from her family and her country. “Nobody but me” is the quote posted on her Instagram account.

Why has HH hidden her? Why has she considered such a burden by her father? Why has he lied for more than a decade about his own children? Is this the kind of person you want as your leader?

You be the judge.
