This assembly would take place virtually today. As per the information provided on the website of the Cuban National Assembly, the inclusive session would be based on the role of the parliaments succeeding the COVID-19 pandemic and also for the foundation of a better future ahead.

Esteban Lazo, probably in his speech, would discuss about the experiences of his country in preventing and fighting the new coronavirus – COVID-19 pandemic and also would include the development of five vaccine candidates.

He would further highlight and expose the negative impacts of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States on the economy and civilisation of Cuba, which is the result of more than 240 unilateral coercive actions taken by the administration of Donald Trump earlier.

Many organisations and nations have requested the government of the United States to lift the embargo blockade on Cuba.

Recently, a global charity – OXFAM has urged the United States President to lift the sanctions and to normalise relations between both countries as Cuba fights the worst pandemic in 30 years.

Cuba’s economy was down at 11 per cent in the year 2020, its worst performance since the year 1993.

The United States has placed these blockades since 1962. Since then the relationship between both countries have remained low, the then president of the US – Donald Trump augmented the measures following a historic but temporary easing of tensions under Barack Obama in between 2014 and 2016.

The current United States President, Joe Biden has promised to bring back some policies of Obama to normalize the ties between the US and Cuba but still, he has not made any announcement regarding this.

On 26 May, Cuba has reported 1,129 cases of the COVID-19 virus taking the total number of the COVID-19 cases to 1.37 lakh. Around 1.29 lakh people have been recovered from the mutant and the island has a death rate of 923 amid the pandemic.
