Bahamas: Southern Tier’s local college is partnering with the University of the Bahamas to provide students with the opportunity to study abroad.

Earlier this week, the Elmira College and the University of The Bahamas signed an agreement allowing students to study abroad for an entire semester in New York or the Bahamas island.

On signing the agreement, the President of Elmira College – Dr Charles Lindsay, stated, “We have a long and rich history with the Bahamas through our scholarship program with Sunshine Insurance, the research opportunities that Franon Wilson mentioned on San Salvador and now what I see as a culminating relationship with the University of The Bahamas.”

This partnership plan would provide numerous opportunities for students to study abroad. The students would earn college credit, have an international exhibition and real-life experiences through this program.

President of Elmira College added, “I think the agreement with the University of The Bahamas will enable our students to take advantage of the many opportunities at the University of The Bahamas to have this culturally enriching experience and provide them with a meaningful study of abroad experience.”

The University of the Bahamas, on this agreement, have stated they have been looking forward to this type of partnership from a long time. Currently, there are more than a hundred alumni from Elmira College are residing in the Bahamas island.

The President of the University of The Bahamas – Dr Rodney Smith, has asserted that “Several years ago now, our University started talking about an institution-wide policy that would need all University of the Bahamas students to have at least one study abroad opportunity before they graduate from the University.”

Bahamas’ university’s President further added that this opportunity with Elmira College would allow this to become a reality, and the university is moving closer and closer to make that an institution-wide policy.
