Education to remain priority to contribute in sustainable and psychosocial development: Alfred

Dominica marked its 4th anniversary of the International Day of Education, which is observed every year on January 24 to commemorate the role of Education in maintaining peace and development in society.

During the public address, Minister for Education Octavia Alfred said that Education always remains as the top priority for the people of Dominica to contribute in the field of sustainable development and to the psychosocial development of all students.

United Nations General Assembly first celebrated the International Day of Education on January 24, 2018, for the very first time. The theme for this year was, “Changing course, transforming education.”

Minister Alfred said, “We require Education to contribute in the field of sustainable development. We require Education to contribute towards the psychosocial development of our students. For example, by integrating environmental Education in all curriculums and by training teachers in these specific fields.”

She further said this year’s international day of Education would play a key role in showcasing the major transformations that must be nurtured to realize everyone’s fundamental right towards Education and build a more sustainable, inclusive and peaceful future.

The Minister further noted, “It will create a great platform on how to empower education as a public endeavour, how to steer the digital transformation, support teachers, safeguard the planet and unlock the potential in every person to make their contribution towards collective well-being and our shared home.”

At the same time, the Minister highlighted the role of Education to fully contribute to sustainable development by forging a new social contract for Education as called for by the UNESCO report for Education released in November last year.

Meanwhile, Minister has further highlighted the commendable work done by the officials of the Ministry of Education, principals and teachers at all levels from early childhood to tertiary Education.

At the same time, she added that Dominica is already engaged in universal primary Education and universal secondary Education and added that the nation would continue to contribute its best towards the field of Education to ensure that every second child leaves the school with a skill.
