Dr Carla Barnett to assume office as new Secretary-General of CARICOM today

The new Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) - Dr Carla Barnett, would be assuming office today from 10 am ECT.

Caribbean Region: The new Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) – Dr Carla Barnett, would be assuming office today from 10 am ECT.

The Chairman of CARICOM, as well as the Prime Minister Hon Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda, would welcome the new Secretary-General and deliver greetings from the Conference of CARICOM Heads of government.

Dr Barnett would be addressing the ceremony and is expected to highlight her vision for CARICOM. With this, the new Secretary-General  

is expected to indicate certain matters that would engage her immediate attention. 

Dr Barnett earlier has served as the first woman and the youngest person appointed as Deputy-Secretary of CARICOM from the time period – (1997 -2002). 

Dr Barnett is an economist who has also broken other difficulties while working across the English-speaking Caribbean. She was also the first woman appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, and as Financial Secretary, in Belize. 

Dr Barnett has also worked at the Caribbean Development Bank – CDB as Country Economist and Vice President, Operations.

Dr Barnett carries over from Dominican Economist Ambassador – Irwin LaRocque, who served as the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) from 2011-2021. 

With this, she becomes the eighth Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its ancestor, the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA), following these other distinguished servants of the Caribbean Community. 

The Caribbean Community is an intergovernmental organisation of 15 member states throughout the Caribbean. It has main objectives that are to promote – economic integration & cooperation among its members, to make sure that the benefits of integration are equitably shared, and to coordinate foreign policy.
