Roseau,Dominica: First Prime Minister of Dominica Patrick John passed away on Tuesday morning aged 83. Current Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit sent out condolences to his wife and children.

As per reports, Patrick John was suffering from some heart-related illness for a long time and had earlier undergone treatment in Martinique.

Prime Minister of Dominica Dr Roosevelt Skerrit sent out condolences to John’s family and stated that the government would be bearing all the expenses of the funeral and the flag will be flown half-mast.

“I am deeply saddened by the demise of Dominica’s first Prime Minister, Patrick Roland John. He made a tremendous contribution to the country’s development—condolences to his wife and his children on their loss.” Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit wrote on Twitter.

Patrick Roland John was the first Prime Minister of Dominica; he was also the last one to hold the position of Premier in the country. He led Dominica to freedom from the United Kingdom. He was the leader of the Waterfront and Allied Workers’ Union and mayor of Roseau before being chosen to the legislature in 1970.

John assumed as the first Prime Minister of Dominica on 3 November 1978 when the nation got independent from Britain. He was also the honorary commander of Dominica’s 80-strong defence force.

Globally, he displayed interest in development that saw the island’s future joined up to the West. One of his first acts after independence was to build diplomatic relations with South Korea.
