Dominicans will be part of national reset going into 2023 if they vote for Labour Party: PM Skerrit

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit stated that they want a significant number of Dominicans to vote for them and be a part of the national reset that is necessary going into 2023. He outlined that the 2022 campaign of the Dominica Labour Party was built on two fundamental themes; 1. That Labour is still the best choice, and 2. Stability is key

During his address, PM Skerrit cited, “The choice is very crystal clear. You are either voting for the Labour Party on December 6th or you are not. There are no other categories of voters in these elections. People must make up their minds on which side of the fence they stand. UWP had an eleventh hour apparently to show what it is made of and once again it demonstrated that Labour is still the best choice for Dominica. We don’t just want to win these elections. We want a significant number of Dominicans to vote for us and be a part of the national reset that is necessary going into 2023. So, the elections on December 6th is not a spectator sport.”

He said that supporters of the Dominica Labour Party need to understand it will take votes in the boxes. They cannot be a Labour Party supporter and say to him that they are not going to vote. They cannot wish the Labour Party well and tell him that they are grateful for all that Labour has done for the, their community and country and then reward the party by not voting for it.

While condemning the United Workers Party, PM Roosevelt Skerrit stated that the outcome of the UWP convention today reinforces the seriousness of the times in which we live. UWP pressured Lennox Linton to resign in September. He said that was after the plotters had spent the previous three months searching for what they considered pedigree leadership. In automobile terms, they decided they wanted either a Mercedes and BMW or a Bentley.

“This is what they were looking for – they set the standards that high so no existing member of the party was considered up to par. With general elections due in 2025 they were continuing to search and we heard of this professional; we heard of the daughter of this body. All kinds of brand names, “said the prime minister.

PM Skerrit cited that UWP had no one in the position of the part’s leadership for almost three months as he called an election in early November, and all the brand name persons – the Mercedes, BMW and the Bentley and even the little Toyota from Wesley jumped off the ship. Little Marcellin from Penville went up simply on the strength of youth.

He asserted that they chopped off Marcellin’s head, and tonight the UWP is led by a gentleman that could not even convince the constituency he hails from to vote for him.

Condemning the UWP leader, PM Skerrit mentioned, “A man who packed and ran when hurricanes began to shake Dominica. A man who never sent a single barrel home after Maria. A man who claims to work for a foreign government but who could not get a vaccine, far less a Covid test kit for the people of Dominica.”

He said that the UWP is the most environmentally friendly party in the world…with their recycling of leaders. Thompson Fontaine is a brand new second-hand leader.

“On November 6, I said that this country needed a national reset to avoid the danger of Dominica being put in the wrong hands at the worse possible times. Thompson Fontaine does not believe in the social programmes that the government has in place. Yes, We Care, NEP, the $300.00 non-contributory pension. Thompson Fontaine believes that Dominica has a bloated public service. Thompson Fontaine is an economist – the first thing that he would do if he were to ever assume the leadership of this country is to cut the public service in half, “said the prime minister while highlighting poor leadership by Thompson Fontaine.

PM Roosevelt Skerrit stated that those public servants who are tonight straddling the fence need to understand the implications of the UWP leadership for them. The UWP is not fooling anybody. They were talking about “orange is the new blue”. Many of those so-called independents are agents of the UWP.

He added, “It is not about observing it from your air-conditioned office. Even if you are appointed to the service, a UWP government led by some person like Thompson Fontaine would find ways and means of sending home appointed public officers. So, don’t believe that you are safe and therefore you don’t need Labour anymore. Your fortune is in jeopardy by what we see unfolding in the UWP. We have to use this election to send a clear message that Dominica is firmly behind the Dominica Labour Party.”

He said that the seniors of the UWP stubbornly refused to accept that young people have ability. Eighteen years ago, they said that the Labour Party sent a boy to do a man’s job and even though the boy has done the job – and he dare say remarkably well, they today told a 38-year-old that he’s not ready yet.
