The government of Dominica is all set to commence a series of public consultations on the review of the electoral system in the country on Monday, August 14, 2023.

Roseau, Dominica: The government of Dominica is all set to commence a series of public consultations on the review of the electoral system in the country on Monday, August 14, 2023.

 It will be conducted by Sir Dennis Byron, who submitted the report on the system. 

The first consultation will be held at the State House Conference Center at 7 pm. The members of the legal fraternity will attend the first session of the consultation.

On the other hand, the second will be attended by the representatives of political parties and independent candidates.  The second session will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at the same venue and time. 

The session will also be held for members of the public service, trade unions, business associations, youth based organizations, sports associations, and the media. 

Along with that, medical professionals, engineers and contractors and managers of financial services, among other groups, will also become part of the consultation. 

Apart from that, several representatives of the Organization of American States (OAS), The Commonwealth, CARICOM and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) will also participate in the consultations.

Prime Minister of Dominica- Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, will send the invitation for these representatives. 

The final report on the reform of the electoral system was submitted by Sir Dennis Byron on Monday, June 12, 2023 following a comprehensive review of Dominica’s electoral system and processes.

The participants of the consultations will consider the Phase 1 report. The report includes a draft Regulation of Electors Bill 2023 and a draft Registration of Electors Bill 2023. 

Beside this, the Phase 2 report consists of the following bills: 

  • The draft House of Assembly (Elections) Bill 2023
  • The draft House of Assembly (Electors) Regulations 2023
  • The draft House of Assembly Election Petition Rules 2023
  • The draft Electoral Commission Bill 2023

The consultations will be ended on Monday, August 28, 2023. It will feature several sessions planned at the community level and with members of the Diaspora. It will ensure participation from a wide cross-section of Dominican society.

The government of Dominica also asked the suggestions from the public on the report. The public is invited to send their feedback on the report with the written submissions to cabsec@dominica.gov.dm.
