Dominica: Triple jumper of Commonwealth of Dominica Thea Lafond stepped to secure her position for the finals of the Triple Jump event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Friday.
Notably, the final round will occur on Sunday, 1st August 2021, at 7:15 am (Caribbean Time ).
Also, She set a national record as she jumped 14.60 meters in her first attempt.
Before the final round, In an interview with a news channel, she said, ” Although I switched to the US when I was just five years old, I always consider myself a proud Dominican. “
She added, “We are a very tiny country, but we are proud of our culture, and I am proud to represent them. “
Moreover, Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced Friday that the government would honour the national triple jumper, Thea Lafond, whether or not she wins Sunday’s final event at the Olympics in Japan.
During debate on the EC$993.6 million national budget PM Skerrit extended congratulations to the athlete, who is just one of two competitors from the island at the Olympics.
Additionally, Skerrit said that the whole Dominica will be rooting for LaFond on Sunday “and whether or not she is victorious, she is already a winner”.
“She earned herself a sport having qualified for the finals of the triple jump. She did a record of 14.60 meters which is a new national record. The qualifying mark was 14.40. ” Skerrit said.
Apart from Pm Skerrit whole legislature applauds on their own athlete for this success.
Prime Minister further added, “I want to say to her that we are rooting for her. The entire nation will be following on Sunday giving her support and hoping and ensuring that she is on the podium to receive her medal.”
The prime minister also made a significant statement by saying that she already won the triple jump for the Dominica government.
