Dominica: Sports Division Secondary Schools Netball Championship starts with six matches

The Sports Division Secondary Schools Netball Championship of the Commonwealth of Dominica commenced on Tuesday, 10th, 2023, with six matches at three venues.

Roseau, Dominica: The Sports Division Secondary Schools Netball Championship of the Commonwealth of Dominica commenced on Tuesday, 10th, 2023, with six matches at three venues.

 The matches, which will be played in the Under 16 and Under 20 divisions, will take place at the Convent High School grounds, Castle Bruce hard court and the Benjamins Park, doubleheaders will be played at each venue from 2:30 pm.

All are invited to give support to the girls.

An impressive start to the 2023 Sports Division Secondary Schools Netball Championship. Five games were played at three venues on the opening day of the championship.

At Portsmouth :

  • In the Under 16 division
  • Portsmouth Secondary 14
  • Isaiah Thomas Secondary 8

Jewel Benjamin 10 and Lemayah Forde 4 were the scorers for PSS

Mamina Jeune 6 and Faith Vidal 2 scored for ITSS. 

In the Under 20 division

  • Academix 34
  • Portsmouth Secondary 20
  • Rohena Paul 23 and Marissa Andrew 7 were the main scorers for Academix. Talisa St.Louis 10 and Safiya McPherson 6 were the main scorers for PSS.

At the CHS Grounds :

  • UNDER 16
  • Convent High School 28
  • Dominica Grammar School 6
  • Kenya John 22 and Beata Vidal 5 were the main scorers for CHS
  • Rochelle Marshall 3 and Selena Wayland, 3 scored for DGS

At Castle Bruce :

  • UNDER 16
  • North East Comprehensive School 24
  • Castle Bruce Secondary School 5
  • Shanika Bellot, 8, Earlanda Tavernier 6 and Kaydine Wilkinson ten scored for NECS

Diane Augustine, 3, and Celina Winston, two scored for CBSS

  • UNDER 20
  • NECS 47
  • CBSS 5
  • Kelly Nation 23, Earlanda Tavernier 19 and Shakira Bellot, five scored for NECS

Beatrice Thomas 2 and Tansha Drigo 2 were the main scorers for CBSS.

Prior to the commencement of the matches, the schools were presented with a netball compliments the Sports Division.

The championship continues on Thursday 12th, with two matches at Wesley :

  • At 2:30 pm NECS vs DGS in the Under 16
  • At 3:30 pm NECS vs DGS in the Under 20

The government of Dominica is committed to work for the welfare of the sports sector of the country.

The Government of Dominica through the Ministry of Sports has awarded a 2.4 million dollar contract to C&J Electrical Services for the lighting of the Windsor Park Sports Stadium. Lighting of the stadium is a priority for the Government of Dominica as it seeks to position the country in hosting international sporting events in particular cricket and football.
The Windsor Park Sports Stadium was severely damaged through the passage of Hurricane Maria. Government has spent well over 8 million dollars for the rehabilitation of WPSS. The lighting project will include:
* Dismantling of existing two (2) light towers.
* Packaging and placing of dismantled poles into storage
* Demolition of existing four (4) reinforced concrete tower footings
* Disconnection of all existing electrical cables from trenches and distribution boxes
* Repairs and modifications of existing concrete trenches
* Construction of new concrete trenches and concrete distribution boxes
* Construction of six (6) new reinforced concrete tower bases
* Installation of new Armoured (SWA) Cables.
The project will begin later this month and is expected to last 3 months.
