Dominica: PM Skerrit expresses pleasure on being recipient of Order of José Martí

The Order of José Martí is the highest national recognition of Cuba, given to nationals and Heads of States and Governments who have distinguished records in defence of human rights and have made special contributions to education, culture, governance, and well-being of all people.

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica expressed pleasure after being honoured with the Order of José Martí in Cuba on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. 

The Order of José Martí is the highest national recognition of Cuba, given to nationals and Heads of States and Governments who have distinguished records in defence of human rights and have made special contributions to education, culture, governance, and well-being of all people.

José Marti was a poet and writer who was also lauded as a nationalist, philosopher, activist and humanitarian and commonly known as the ‘Apostle of Cuban Independence.

Expressing pleasure, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit noted, “I am honoured to be the recipient of the Order of José Martí, Cuba’s highest national recognition, conferred on Tuesday, April 26, 2022.”

He further stressed that Cuba and Dominica shared a very cordial relationship and bilateral ties. The strong friendship between the two countries has always worked for the upliftment of the country.  

PM Skerrit also hailed Cuba and expressed pride for their collaboration with the country, which is based on principles of trust and confidence. 

He said, “Cuba has been a true and steadfast friend of Dominica, and I am proud to associate with the Cuban ideals and principles of peace, dignity, freedom, self-determination, justice, equity and generosity, which always seeks to improve the condition of people everywhere.”

Extending gratitude to the Cuban government by saying, “Thank you for your support and well wishes.”

He also said, “Cuba’s service to the Commonwealth of Dominica, the world, and to humanity, I thank them for finding me worthy of honour, I express you most humble and deep gratitude.”

The award ceremony commenced at 6:30 p.m. at Revolution Square in Cuba, with the laying of wreaths ceremony at the Monument of José Martí. José Martí was a renowned national hero of the Republic of Cuba. The Order was established in 1972, and a memorial was built in 1978 with the support of former President Fidel Castro.

Outlining their cordial relations with Cuba government, PM Skerrit excalimed,”Through the example of the Cuban people, the world has seen that size is no bar to excellence or global leadership; that determination is the greatest driver for success; and that the human spirit is indomitable in its quest for dignity and freedom.”

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit paid an official visit to Cuba on April 25, 2022, and held a series of meetings with delegations. He also visited various places, such as Fidel Centre in Havana.

Besides this, the Health Minister of Dominica, Dr Irving Mclnytre, also greeted PM Skerrit and stated, “Please join me in extending congratulatory messages to our Prime Minister on such a deserving and prestigious award. Congratulations.”
