Dominica: PM Skerrit addresses opening session of Regional Conference

The address was mainly focused on the issue of Marine Debris, and PM Skerrit outlined its key features. He also discussed several ways to identify the regional challenges of the small island nations.

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit delivered the speech at the opening session of the Regional Conference on ‘Identifying Regional Challenges and Opportunities to Address the Issue of Marine Debris, Sargassum, and Marine Spatial Planning,’ on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. 

The address was mainly focused on the issue of Marine Debris, and PM Skerrit outlined its key features. He also discussed several ways to identify the regional challenges of the small island nations.

The opening session was organized by the World Maritime University, which also invited chief guests to address the opening session. The session is important to highlight major issues related to Marine Spatial Planning and its several factors. 

While expressing happiness o be a part of the opening session, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, noted, “This morning, I had the pleasure of delivering the keynote address during the opening session of the Regional Conference on ‘Identifying Regional Challenges and Opportunities to Address the Issue of Marine Debris, Sargassum, and Marine Spatial Planning,’ organized by the World Maritime University.”

Further, the conference is being held at the Jungle Bay Resort & Spa in Soufriere from April 4-7.

These days, the main focus will be on Climate Change which has largely affected small island nations, especially the Caribbean region. The conference will also feature the developmental agendas of the small island nations. 

The regional conference will focus on ‘Climate Change and Small Island Developing States,’ ‘Blue and Green Economic Responses,’ ‘Socio-economic Assessments of Marine Plastic Pollution, and ‘Sustainable Solutions for the Future,’ among other issues.

The conference will also touch on:

  • Socio-economic Assessments of Marine Plastic Pollution
  • Sustainable Solutions for the Future

 

Prime Minister Skerrit further emphasized, “Within the context of our climate resilience initiatives, I welcomed the focus on the protection of our oceans and the need to preserve the abundance of life within it to secure the socio-economic wellbeing of future generations.”

The conference is led by Dr Cleopatra Doumbia- Henry, the President of the World Maritime University. Dr Henry is a distinguished Dominican who previously worked in senior management positions at the International Labour Organization (ILO).
