Dominica: PM Roosevelt Skerrit meets OAS election observer mission

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit welcomed representatives of the Organization of American States (OAS) election observer mission in the Commonwealth of Dominica on Saturday. 

The meeting was held at the Office of the Prime Minister of Dominica. PM Skerrit cited, “I welcomed representatives of the Organization of American States (OAS) election observer mission for a courtesy call at the Office of the Prime Minister on Saturday.” 

The OAS mission is led by former Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Perry Christie.

PM Roosevelt Skerrit asserted that the government of Dominica invited the observer mission to check transparency in the electoral process. In the interest of transparency in the electoral process, the Government of Dominica invited observer missions from The Commonwealth Secretariat, the Organization of American States (OAS), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Latin American Council of Electoral Experts (LACEE) to monitor the December 6 general elections.

Dominica is all set to go into polls on December 6, 2022. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit called for the snap general elections. The candidates filed their nominations on November 18, 2022. Around 45 candidates have submitted their nominations to contest the election, which is the largest number in the decade. 

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit also stated that the nomination of 45 candidates in the 2022 elections showed that democracy is alive and well in the country. Earlier, PM Skerrit announced giving free airtime on the media outlets of Dominica for the campaigning of the elections. 

The six constituencies of the Commonwealth of Dominica have been declared to Dominica Labour Party as they will not face any electorate on election day. Only DLP candidates filed their nominations from these constituencies. 

PM Roosevelt Skerrit urged the citizens to come out and use their constitutional right to vote. He stressed that every vote will be counted and he wanted every person to cast a vote and choose their representatives. 

Dominica Labour Party also hosted rallies to launch their candidates from different candidates.
