Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica- Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, handed over eighteen (18) housing units to families in Bataca and Sineku on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica- Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, handed over eighteen (18) housing units to families in Bataca and Sineku on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

The units were constructed under the 11th EDF B-Envelope State and Resilience Contract for Rehabilitation following Hurricane Maria. Parliamentary Representative for Roseau- Melissa Poponne Skerrit, also attended the handover ceremony.

The government of Dominica added, “Eighteen (18) housing units have been handed over to families in Bataca and Sineku. The units were constructed under the 11th EDF B-Envelope State and Resilience Contract for Rehabilitation following Hurricane Maria.”

The government of Dominica has worked efficiently in the rehabilitation process after Hurricane Maria hit the country. After Hurricane Maria left an estimated 90 percent of buildings damaged or destroyed in Dominica the small Caribbean Island of just 70,000 has been on a clear path to becoming the first climate-resilient nation by 2030.

After witnessing various natural disasters due to climate change, the country has been focusing on building a resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding natural- calamities, including category-five hurricanes.

On the path of climate resiliency, the government of Dominica launched the revolutionary “Housing Initiative”, aiming to provide homes to the people displaced due to Tropical Erika and Hurricane Maria in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

Various housing units have been constructed in the different regions of Dominica such as Cotton Hill, Georgetown, Jimmit, Roseau City Square, Bellevue Chopin, Castle Bruce, San Sauveur, Grand Fond, La Plaine, and Delices. The government of Dominica, under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, has handed over the keys to about 1,500 families over the period of four years. The homes were distributed to the families who lost their houses because of Hurricane Maria.

Along with that, the government of Dominica has also been constructing several housing units in the areas, including Scotts Head, Eggleston, Canefield, Marigot, as well as Plat Ma Pierre. Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, during an event in 2019 stated that “the government of Dominica will not rest until every Dominican has a resilient roof over their heads“.

The government of Dominica has also constructed climate-resilient infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and many more after they get damaged by Hurricane Maria.

Earlier, Wills Strathmore Stevens Primary School in Marigot was officially reopened on May 13, 2022. The school which was heavily damaged during the passage of Hurricane Maria was rehabilitated at a cost of over 2.1 million dollars

The Government of Canada provided funding for the project which saw the upgrade of the auditorium, computer lab and library, kitchen, cafeteria, guidance and counselling room and washroom facilities. A new early childhood education centre and an administrative building also formed part of the project.
