Roseau, Dominica: The Ministry of Education of the Commonwealth of Dominica launched its annual Pride and Heritage month. The month features weekly activities focusing on Dominica’s Heritage.

The week of activities goes as follows:

  • Week One: 3rd -7th : Theme: Celebrating our Heroes /Celebrating our Heritage
  • Week Two 10th – 14: Emblems Week
  • Week Three: 17th – 21st: Theme: Go Local – Meals from the Dominican Food Basket
  • FRIDAY, 21ST OCTOBER 2022 – Cassava Day and National Tree Planting and School Beautification Day.
  • Week Four: 24th – 28th: Our Heritage Our Culture / Dominican Musical Heritage.

So October is Heritage Month in Dominica in the run-up to Kwéyol week and National Day, 3 November. The St. John’s Primary, Portsmouth: “Ethnic groups and cultures which make up Dominica.” There is also “Kalinago heritage contribution to Dominica’s Culture.” And then a specific village history: “Paix Bouche in the past.”

It really is time that the Ministry of Education, as part of its Library Service, the National Parks Division, or the Department of Culture, creates a post to employ someone to respond to these educational needs.

For something to survive, it must be passed to the youth! The population of the Kalinago People of Dominica may be small compared to their Afro-Caribbean counterparts. Still, they, too, work to raise their youth in the history, culture, and traditions that remain today.

By blending modern society and the importance of remembering your roots, the First People of Dominica continue to educate both their youth, the wider community and travellers in Kalinago history. Everyone must explore the rich history and culture of the Kalinago in Dominica.

Dominica is the land of 365 rivers, and of course, river tubing is a popular activity for friends, families, couples, and solo travellers. And with all the river adventures, Dominica makes sure to protect the environment by prohibiting littering and deforestation of the natural flora.
