Dominica is under Tropical Storm Warning: PM Skerrit

He further informed that based on this information, Dominica is now placed under a tropical storm warning, which means that the Elsa storm conditions could reach the island within the succeeding few hours.

Dominica: The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica -Roosevelt Skerrit, issued a statement on the tropical storm, Elsa.

PM Skerrit asserted that as per the information shared by the Barbados Meteorological Services, the tropical storm Elsa has been developed into category one of Hurricane.

Following the statement, PM Skerrit informed that the system developed into a tropical storm on 5 am, Thursday, 1 July 2021, the islands of the Southern Antillies issued an alert for the island. The inhabitants from across the Lesser Antilles has been monitoring the weather system for the past few days.

He further informed that based on this information, Dominica is now placed under a tropical storm warning, which means that the Elsa storm conditions could reach the island within the succeeding few hours.

As per the National Disaster Plan, the Dominican government has suspended all the businesses on the Caribbean island. The government has also advised the citizens, especially those residing in the prone areas to flooding, storm, landslides and intense winds, to limit their movement and exercise extreme caution.

“There is no need to get panic, but it is significant to take precautions against the Elsa storm, which has turned now into category one of Hurricane,” PM Skerrit added.

The prime minister also asked the citizens not to take this alert or warning lightly and urged them to remain in their houses in order to provide any casualties. All the residents must make sure that they have essential supplies.

PM Skerrit asserted that the Dominican government would continue to update the citizens on a regular basis. The residents should be kept updated regarding the Elsa storm via radios by the ODM- Office of Disaster Management and National Emergency Planning.

The prime minister also requested the island’s citizens to follow the ODM advisories strictly and asked the citizens to obtain any news regarding the weather conditions and storms from an official source only.
