He stated that tourists’ next road trip to the north of Dominica should include a stop at the ‘Cold Soufriere’ in the community of Penville.

Salient features of ‘Cold Soufriere’ are as follows:

  • In many of the islands in the Eastern Caribbean, geothermal activity is evident and this has resulted in a number of areas being referred to as “Soufrière”.
  • As is the case for many of these Soufrières, there are pools of bubbling water and a smell of sulphurous gases being released into the atmosphere.
  • However, what makes the Cold Soufriere so special is that the water in all the pools is cold, and there are no fumaroles belching out steam or hot gases (hence the name Cold Soufriere).
  • There are over seventeen pools in the Cold Soufrière, and it is believed that the sulphur found in the area are good skin cleanser and the mud can be used as a face mask.

He further extended Special thanks to Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica Dr Roosevelt Skerrit for prioritizing this very unique site. Also, the Ministry of Tourism for playing its part in ensuring that the site is well kept.
