The Hillsborough Bridge in Layou, Dominica, is expected to complete by February this year. St Joseph Constituency’s Member of Parliament, Dr Adis King, has said that the construction related works on the bridge are currently going on.

Dr Adis King added that Hillborough Bridge is a significant project and symbolises government efforts to build resilience and keep residents safe as a priority.

The left side lane of the Hillsborough Bridge in Layou, one of the most important routes connecting North of the island to the city, was completely washed away due to Hurricane Maria in 2017. Since then, the commuters have been using the route of the west lane to travel to and from Roseau, which has proven to be dangerous.

The project related to the reconstruction of the bridge was started in May 2020 and is now expected to get completed by February 2022.

Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Dr Adis King stated that, “This Government, like everywhere else in the world is facing the issues related to economy, we see it suitable to be sure enough about the safety of our people. So many accidents have also been reported on the west bridge in the past few times as commuters cannot see another vehicle coming. We want to put an end to that.”

The citizens have been waiting for the reconstruction of the Hillsborough bridge for a long time because it is considered a major road connecting the villages to the city of Roseau.

Dominican authorities are working towards uplifting the western section of the bridge, including repainting the railings, sandblasting and painting the bottom beams, and replacing the construction joints on the old bridge.

The Government has planned to invest more towards resilient infrastructural development across Dominica as the island continues on its path to becoming the first climate-resilient nation in the world.
