Dominica: Government announces $200 000 monetary award for Thea Lafond

The government of Dominica has taken a decision to provide Thea Lafond with a monetary award of $200 000 in recognition of her medal-winning performances at the Commonwealth games and the NACAC Senior Championships. 

Roseau, Dominica: The government of Dominica has taken a decision to provide Thea Lafond with a monetary award of $200 000 in recognition of her medal-winning performances at the Commonwealth games and the NACAC Senior Championships. 

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit earlier on Monday, August 222, 2022. 

In order to celebrate her incredible performances in the NACAC Senior Championships and Commonwealth Games and encourage her in her future endeavours, the government of Dominica decided to the decisive steps.  

Lafond gained a silver medal earlier this month at the Commonwealth Games in Women’s Triple Jump and followed this performance with a gold medal at the NACAC championships this past weekend.

During her final jump, she made a record of 14.49m which helped her to secure the gold medal. Due to this, she managed to retain her position as the 2022 Women’s Triple Jump champion. 

The NACAC Senior Championships were held in The Bahamas on Sunday, August 21, 2022, and emerged as a great championship for Thea Lafond.

The second position was grasped by Kenturah Orji from the USA with a jump of 14.32m during the third round of the competition. Thea Lafond secured a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022 held in Birmingham. 

On her big achievement in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Prime Minister of Dominica- Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, posted a warm message with ain aim of greeting her. He posted, “Dominica’s Thea Lafond has got a silver medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the Women’s Triple Jump event. The Government and People of Dominica give Thea the heartiest congratulations on her achievement.” 

The 28-year-old Lafond is a triple jumper who represented Dominica in several international sports events and bagged various titles. During the Commonwealth Games 2018, Lafond created history as she was the first athlete of Dominica to win a medal for the country at the Commonwealth. She secured the bronze medal in the women’s triple jump event.
