Roseau, Dominica: The government of Dominica announced that emergency work is underway on the road of Morne Scope at the southern entrance of Mahaut.

GIS Dominica took to Facebook and asked the motorist and road users to remain cautious when traversing the area. It said, “Motorists and road users along the E O Leblanc Highway, particularly in an area called Morne Scope at the southern entrance of Mahaut, are being urged to exercise caution when traversing the area.”

This is as emergency works are ongoing to return that section of the road to full functionality. The emergency works became necessary as recent heavy rains further caused damage to the already compromised area resulting in the failure of the existing retaining wall.

The Morne Scope area is a critical pass along the E O Leblanc Highway, and the failure of the returning wall caused a significant narrowing of the roadway.

A contractor has been engaged to carry out the work, and a multi-tare retaining wall is being constructed to address the situation. Minister for Public Works Fidel Grant and Parliamentary Representative for Mahaut Cassanni Laville visited the area over the weekend to assess the situation.

The Government of Dominica is committed to ensuring that motorists have safe roadways in order to move freely across the island. The proper repair of the road with the measures of climate resilience will uplift Dominica’s plans to mitigate climate change risks.

The emergency work will prepare the road for the ongoing Hurricane Season 2023. It will also help motorists and road users to traverse the area safely. As per the government of Dominica, once the emergency work is done, the users will use the road efficiently.

The government of Dominica is committed to building climate-resilient infrastructure aiming to mitigate the risks associated with climate change. As Hurricane Season 2023 is ongoing, the perfect planning and vigilant approach will help in enhancing their preparedness for any natural disaster
