The extension of the runway at the Douglas Charles Airport is an important project currently underway. The airport runway is being extended by 185m and includes upgraded apron parking and grooving to improve safety on wet days.

Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit also added that the runway will extend westwards and provide aircraft with an overall available take-off run of 1936 metres from runway 09 (the mountain end), up from the current 1,756 metres.

While providing several benefits, the extension will increase the declared landing distance available on runway 27 (sea end) by 67 metres to a length of 1,808 metres.

The runway will also be grooved to increase safety when wet, thereby increasing pilot confidence on landing.

In December 2021, American Airlines began direct flights from the mainland USA to Douglas Charles Airport. Close collaboration with American Airlines has enabled the identification of improvement opportunities for the Douglas Charles Airport, which is currently being implemented.
