Dominica declares two days of national mourning on demise of Queen Elizabeth II

The Government of Dominica also shared glimpses of the moment when the Queen visited the country on February 19, 1994. Queen Elizabeth died at the age of 96 on Thursday, September 8, 2022, after serving as the British Monarch for over 70 years.

Roseau, Dominica: The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica declared two days of national mourning on the demise of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday, September 12 and Tuesday, September 13, 2022. As a further show of appreciation and respect, the country decided to fly the flags on all public buildings at half-mast on the days of mourning. 

The Government of Dominica also shared glimpses of the moment when the Queen visited the country on February 19, 1994. Queen Elizabeth died at the age of 96 on Thursday, September 8, 2022, after serving as the British Monarch for over 70 years.

Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit also conveyed condolences to the Royal Family and people of the United Kingdom on the demise of Queen Elizabeth II. He stated, “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II inspired respect around the world and conducted the affairs of the Commonwealth with grace and dignity for 70 years. Her passing marks a profound loss for the Commonwealth of Nations and the world. On behalf of the government and people of Dominica, I extend deepest condolences to His Majesty the King, The Queen Consort, the other members of the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom.”

Further, Parliament Representative for Roseau Central Constituency- Melissa Poponne Skerrit also showered grief on her death. She stated, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. She will always be remembered fondly and with respect. 

The longest-serving British Monarch, who came to the throne in 1952, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was Dominica’s Head of State until independence in 1978. 

During her reign, Dominica enjoyed cordial relations with the United Kingdom and benefitted from her steadfast leadership and guidance as Head of the Commonwealth.

Further, the President of Dominica- Charles A Saravin, extended grief on the passing of the Queen and mentioned, “I am deeply shocked after hearing the news of the passing of the Queen on Thursday.”
